Best Matcha in New York
It’s no secret that I love Matcha Latte, and whenever I arrive at a new destination, I always try to find a good Matcha café. I’m currently in New York and got so very happy when I found Setsugekka, a tiny Matcha teahouse in Manhattan that just might be one of the very best Matcha cafés I’ve ever been to!
It was a small place and just one lady working there, but she was amazing. At this café they actually grind their own matcha with a Japanese traditional heavy stone grinder so that they always can serve freshly ground matcha!
They have a Matcha menu with 12 different matchas, all with their own taste depending on where in Japan they originate from, cause matcha flavor varies based on the region where it's grown. For example, matcha from Uji is renowned for its smooth sweetness and umami, while matcha from Sayama boasts a robust, vegetal character. The climate, soil, and altitude of each region contribute unique nuances, creating a diverse spectrum of flavors in this finely powdered green tea.
At Setsugekka you can also choose what thickness the matcha should be; more thick or more watery depending on what you prefer. Naturally you can also choose between warm or ice, and since I had been strolling up and down Manhattan all day I needed a cold drink so I went for an iced Matcha Latte. I normally prefer my latte with almond milk and unfortunately she only had oat milk, but it still tasted so amazing!I was so happy to find this place!
So if you share my passion for matcha and happen to be in New York, don’t miss to swing by this little slice of Matcha Heaven!
