Arctic adventures at the end of the world
We live on a beautiful planet and experiencing the natural wildlife has always been an important part of my life. It’s good for the soul to escape the city sometimes and find peace and tranquility in Nature. At home I love to take super long walks with my dogs in the beautiful forests close to where I live, and when I lived in LA last year I never missed a chance to go for an early morning hike up in the hills.
Recently I was fortunate to be invited to a cruise excursion in the far North of Canada, exploring the Arctic passage west of Greenland. It was the first time I visited these regions and a trip filled with stunning views and amazing wildlife, including polar bears and walrus!
We visited Devon island, the largest uninhabited island on Earth. It was like being on another planet, a vast totally desolate inland plateau filled with rocks, deep canyons and endless mazes of rocky valleys. Felt more like being on Mars than on Earth. And the scientists at NASA actually go there every summer to learn more about how to explore Mars in the future!
When you’re exploring the big North you need to layer up for the cold. Dressing for the Arctics requires careful consideration and since the weather can vary a lot it’s important to pack layers, including warm clothing, rain gear, and thermals depending on the time of year and the route. Sturdy and comfortable footwear is essential as well as sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses of course. And don’t forget a good pair of binoculars for spotting wildlife!
